Day 9: Super Heroes, Villains and Bonding :)

Day Nine began with a slow rousing morning, where the kids awoke bleary-eyed and trudged into a pleasing breakfast of eggs, sausage, and cereal. Then to ease back into routine Warm-Ups were started late to give kids a time to relax into the beautiful red-wood amphitheater where their voices could ring across the pond.

After continuing through their musicianship classes campers wandered to their morning rehearsals where Ensemble began to work on their new commission by Robin Estrada, a Philipina composer from the Bay Area. As well as progression on tricky rhythms by playing a game where they got to vote eighth notes named after book characters off the island, and lastly were treated to a 5 minute nap break in the middle. Meanwhile Concert Choir worked on long-time loved Estonian set, Modal Etudes. Where Nico commented while working on the last song Rain, “Mr. Brown, this is the best rehearsal ever!”

During JV’s snack time camper Molly wanted her younger brother to have a special birthday treat and saved her fruit gummies and taped it to the outside of her birthday card placed with outgoing mail. While the treat may get lost in shipping, the thought was there!

At lunch today counselors stressed the need to eat vegetables, and Veda was fed by fellow cabin-mate Makenna a lovely salad. After lunch under a bright midday sun, campers gathered to a fantastic and bejeweled Super Heroes Vs. Villains spirit day. In first place won a CC cabin compilation nick-named The Sparkle Squad, with the added staff presence by Cat and Talia.

During Free-time to rest their voices CC and Ensemble had a lower energy free-time, while Joyful Voices spent a lovely time at the pool. Especially popular were competitive games of set, and many camper enjoyed playing chess versus Mr. Brown. Kids were also delighted, for arts and crafts with stained glass window decals. As well as fun as coloring in with glitter glue to add a little extra sparkle. Additionally there was a Camper-lead face paint station thanks to Fritz and Avi which was absolutely adored. Special quote from Cara who’s face-paint flower inspired “Everything is just better with glitter”.

At Recital this afternoon we were treated to the first vocal performances by CC and Ensemble singers, Genevieve, Ainsley, and Ayla, Rachel also sang a long-time fan favorite from the Musical She Loves Me , “Vanilla Ice Cream”.

After a delicious dinner of burgers, salad and watermelon Evening rehearsal for CC and Ensemble, did listening exercises and the campers were released into intimate and heart-warming sessions of cabin bonding with counselors, including group games, ice-breakers and capture the flag. And finally ending the night with an early bedtime.
